50%
of a plant’s energy is consumed in blowing air for microbes. We want to help reduce the cost of keeping your biology stable.

No more manual sampling, downtime or overshooting.
Treatment anomalies creep up unseen. By the time you realize, it is already costing you.
Effluent quality drifts between lab samples. One exceedance can mean fines, reports and lost trust.
Blowers run on fixed setpoints and overshoot oxygen demand. Aeration is often more than half of a plant's energy bill.

One platform covering your whole treatment

Lir Labs is building an intelligent platform to monitor and control the biology of the water cycle, in particular in wastewater treatment plants.
The biology that cleans our water is still checked by hand: a sample under the microscope, once a week. In this project we take our live-cell imaging technology out of the lab and into operating plants — installing, measuring and refining it under real conditions, together with the teams who run them.
The goal is a system validated in its operational environment (TRL 8): continuous insight into the biology, translated into decisions operators can act on — the prerequisite for running plants as an active part of the water cycle rather than merely staying within limits.
The project runs from 01.06.2026 to 31.05.2027 and is funded under the HTI-Start-ups (STEP) programme, which supports start-ups mentored by high-tech incubators/accelerators. The approving authority is NBank – Investitions- und Förderbank Niedersachsen, with funds drawn from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the 2021–2027 funding period. The grant amounts to up to €272,708.85, corresponding to 90% of the total eligible expenditure of €303,009.84. The project is supported by the Future GreenTech Incubator as high-tech incubator and the August-Wilhelm Scheer Institute as cooperation partner.
